Sea Fishermen’s Pilgrimage in Puck
The Sea Fishermen’s Pilgrimage in Puck is one of the most important events in the Kashubian calendar, blending tradition, religion, and maritime culture. Every year, on the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul, the patrons of fishermen, the people of Puck and fishermen from the entire Baltic coast gather to take part in a pilgrimage on the waters of Puck Bay, giving thanks for successful catches.
This event has its roots in fishing traditions dating back to the Middle Ages when fishermen honored their patrons, Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In Kashubian tradition, fishermen believed that these saints protected them from the dangers of the sea and ensured bountiful catches. For this reason, every year in Puck, a solemn mass is held on the water, during which fishing boats and vessels sail out into Puck Bay to pray together for prosperity. The pilgrimage is open to all – whether they have their own boats or would prefer to join organized trips. After the water mass, pilgrims return to Puck where further celebrations take place, including artistic performances, tastings of local specialties, and communal singing.
