The Association of Maritime Cities and Municipalities
The Association of Maritime Cities and Municipalities based in Gdańsk has been playing an important role in promoting and developing maritime culture in the Baltic Sea region for years.
As an organisation associating coastal local governments, it works for the integration of maritime environments, sustainable development of the coast and educating citizens in the spirit of maritime identity. One example of the Union’s involvement is its participation in the international BOATMAN project, which aims to develop competences in traditional boatbuilding crafts and popularise maritime heritage among residents and young people. As part of the project, the Union organises a series of boatbuilding workshops held in various locations in Gdańsk – from marinas and schools to cultural centres and yachts. Thanks to this, residents have the opportunity to learn the secrets of boat building, the history of sailing traditions and participate in the process of creating and repairing wooden units. This is not only a form of learning, but also building a bond with the sea and shaping attitudes of responsibility for the maritime heritage of the Baltic Sea. There are also many organisations, associations and sailing schools operating in the City, which continue maritime traditions, passing on knowledge and passion to subsequent generations. Modern Gdańsk is also a meeting place for people of the sea from all over the world – from fishermen and sailors to scientists researching climate change and the ecosystems of the Baltic Sea.
