The Gdańsk Sports Centre
Gdańsk's maritime heritage is not limited to the past, however. The city develops contemporary maritime culture through numerous events, regattas, festivals and educational activities.
The Gdańsk Sports Centre plays an important role here, managing the sailing infrastructure and promoting water activities such as training cruises, sailing courses and sports events in the waters of the Bay of Gdańsk. One of the greatest symbols of Gdańsk’s sailing and shipbuilding traditions is the training sailboat “Generał Zaruski”. This beautifully restored sailboat inspires and teaches young sailors. The Gdańsk Sports Centre plays an important role in organising cruises on the STS Generał Zaruski, promoting sustainable tourism and helping people connect with the beauty of the sea. The STS Generał Zaruski is a historic sailing vessel owned by the City of Gdańsk and operated by the Gdańsk Sport Centre. Originally built in 1939, the ship has been fully restored and now serves as an educational platform for youth and community-based maritime programmes. As part of the BOATMAN project, the Gdańsk Sport Centre aims to develop a unique sailing experience that combines traditional seamanship with mindfulness and connection to the natural environment. We understand maritime heritage not only as history and craftsmanship, but also as the surrounding marine ecosystem. Through this approach, we promote a sustainable and reflective form of tourism that encourages deeper engagement with both maritime heritage and nature. The mindfulness sessions onboard are designed as an inner journey — a chance to slow down, reconnect with oneself, and build a sense of unity with the sea and its rhythms. Guided practices such as movement, creative expression, and meditative observation of the natural surroundings aim to foster awareness, calm, and a renewed sense of belonging to the marine world.
